This is a news story in the New York Times. Of the six links in this screenshot, the first five go to other, non-NYT sites that provide more information about the linked text. The Project Excelsior link goes to the national Museum of the US Air Force’s ‘Fact Sheet’ on the project. The last link goes to a special topic-specific page (that looks partially hand-edited) about NASA. Given that NASA is insanely familiar to everyone and sources of information about it are widely available and well-known, I think there are a strong editorial and usability arguments for linking to this NYT page.

Not a single one of these links is something like nyt.com/tag/space or nyt.com/search/project+excelsior. They are giving up cheap-ass Gawker Media pageviews for increased journalistic quality.

I feel like I rag on the New York Times a lot, and everyone else on the internet rags on them too about other stuff (personally, I think the idea of selling the news is a totally reasonable thing to try), but a lot of the web end of the paper is really top-notch, and this is an example. This story looks like it was in the paper edition as well, so some online editor probably had to go back and supply all those links (unless the journos do that in their copy now?).

In summary, good job New York Times!

Allen’s Coffee Brandy is a coffee-flavoured liqueur popular in New England, especially Maine, where it has been the best-selling liquor product every year for over 20 years. Sales in 2008 were 1,100,000 bottles. With a population of 1,300,000, Mainers consumed nearly one bottle for every man, woman, and child in the state.

—Wikipedia

If there was a “Local Tipple of the Month Club”, I would join it. What other regional favorite liquors are there like this in the USA? 50 bottles of weird booze. Actually, I guess “State Hooch of the Week” would make more sense. To make it a full year, Puerto Rico could contribute that awesome stuff that tastes like eggnog and I’m sure some other pseudostate could kick something in.

Also striking is the fact that the specific favorite flavor of brandy is coffee. Rhode Island is obsessed with coffee milk. If I recall correctly, Dunkin’ Donuts supplies 40% of the average New Englander’s calories. What is with New England’s love affair with the Roasted Bean?

Allen’s Coffee Brandy is normally consumed in a mixture of one part brandy to two parts milk. This concoction is generally called a “Sombrero,” and sometimes pejoratively “Fat Ass in a Glass”. The product has been called both “the champagne of Maine” and “an epidemic.”

How about “Life…The Worst Record In Town”? Creston hates this so much that we barely play a single song off it. Hard to blame him when so much of the album is a complete waste of music. This from when Joe [Preston] was in the band, but all he does on it is play bass on a couple songs because Stephen would get so shitfaced that he would pass out at 4 p.m. everyday, much like during Special Wishes. Hard to blame him either, when youre working on songs this half-baked and substandard, even for us. Put out by Hydra Head, who somehow managed to put their bongs down long enough to design a vinyl version that was so expensive to produce that we have to sell them for 30 bucks which barely covers the cost. Good thinking, guys.

Amazon has it up for pre-order now for less than twenty bucks, which definitely beats paying $449 on eBay.
